Our Story
miGreenKitchen was founded in 2021 by best friends Erin Wilkins and Philippa (Pip) Chilcott, who shared a passion for nutrition, sustainability and creating healthier everyday food. While studying Science and Nutrition at the University of Leeds, they discovered the remarkable nutritional benefits of microgreens after a family friend introduced them to these tiny but powerful plants.
Inspired by the idea that microgreens could become more than just a garnish, Erin and Pip began growing them in a greenhouse at their university house. They experimented with different varieties and growing methods before embarking on the lengthy process of developing food products that would retain as much nutritional value as possible.
Their hard work was recognised when they received an Enterprise Scholarship Award through the University of Leeds, providing mentoring, business support and funding to help turn their vision into reality. After years of research, product development and testing, they launched their first product: Broccoli Microgreen, Basil & Cashew Pesto, combining home-grown broccoli microgreens with fresh ingredients in a nutrient-rich pesto.
Today, miGreenKitchen continues to grow its own microgreens in a dedicated food-safe growing space in Leeds while developing innovative products that make it easier for people to enjoy the nutritional benefits of microgreens as part of everyday meals.
Meet The Team
Erin Wilkins and Philippa (Pip) Chilcott founded miGreenKitchen while studying Science and Nutrition at the University of Leeds. Their complementary interests helped shape the business, with Erin's passion for sustainability sitting alongside Pip's enthusiasm for growing plants and exploring innovative food production.
What began as a university project quickly became a shared mission to make nutrient-rich food more accessible. Erin and Pip remain closely involved in growing their microgreens, developing new products and educating customers about the health and environmental benefits of these tiny greens.
How It's Made
miGreenKitchen grows its own microgreens in a dedicated indoor growing facility in Leeds, allowing the team to control quality from seed to finished product. Broccoli microgreens are carefully harvested before being blended into recipes designed to preserve their natural nutritional value.
The company's first product combines broccoli microgreens with basil, cashews and other plant-based ingredients to create a fresh pesto that provides a simple way to add more vegetables and nutrients to everyday meals. Every stage of product development has focused on retaining flavour while keeping the ingredients as fresh and minimally processed as possible.
Sustainability
Sustainability has been part of miGreenKitchen's vision from the very beginning. The founders recognised that microgreens require significantly less space and fewer resources than many conventional crops while delivering exceptional nutritional value.
The business grows its microgreens in-house and is developing reusable hydroponic growing methods to improve resource efficiency while producing consistently high-quality crops.
